Traumatic
Brain Injury 101: Understanding the Basics and How to Help
Halina (Lin) Haag, Faculty of Social Work
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of disability in Canada, yet a
lack of knowledge and understanding of TBI often leads to misdiagnosis and
inadequate support, resulting in higher rates of mental illness, poverty,
unemployment, and homelessness. This lecture will raise TBI awareness by
helping people understand the basics (how you get one, what it looks like, and
what happens for people after a TBI), and discussing the increased challenges
experienced by people in particularly vulnerable populations (women exposed to
domestic violence, homeless and/or criminalized individuals, and people
struggling with mental health and addictions).
Event Type(s): Adults and Seniors
Age Group(s): Adults (18+), Seniors (55+)
